ADHD Assessment in Doncaster: What to Expect
Booking an ADHD assessment can bring plenty of questions. What will you be asked? Why do we need information about childhood? What happens if the evidence does not support a diagnosis? Knowing what to expect can make the appointment feel more manageable.
At Private ADHD Assessment Doncaster, we assess adults aged 18+ and children aged 7–17. You can attend in person in Doncaster or by secure video. We welcome people from Doncaster, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, with video appointments available more widely across the UK.

Screening is a starting point, not a diagnosis
Our free screening questionnaires can help identify possible ADHD traits and inform a discussion about whether a full assessment may be appropriate. A screening result cannot confirm or rule out ADHD on its own. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis already decided.
Where difficulties are affecting everyday life, the next step is to consider the wider picture. We will explain the information we need and answer questions about the process before you commit to an appointment.
The information we bring together
Your assessment considers current difficulties, developmental history and their impact across everyday settings. For adults, this may include education, employment, relationships and home life. For children, we consider experiences at home, in education and in other relevant settings.
Supporting information from family members, school or another appropriate person helps us understand experiences beyond the appointment. Previous reports can also be useful. Please tell us when records are unavailable or obtaining information is difficult, so we can discuss suitable alternatives and any limits to the evidence.
What happens at the appointment?
The assessment is a structured conversation with time to explain your experiences. Frank, our mental health nurse, carries out assessments, with multidisciplinary input that includes Charlotte, our occupational therapist. We consider what the information means for the individual rather than treating a questionnaire score as the answer.
We explore attention, organisation, activity levels and impulsivity, alongside relevant physical and mental health history. We also consider other possible explanations and coexisting needs. There is no expectation to perform in a particular way or demonstrate a symptom during the appointment.
For a child assessment, the young person's own views matter alongside information from parents and other settings. Let us know in advance about communication, sensory or access needs so we can discuss how to support participation.

Understanding the outcome
An assessment may support an ADHD diagnosis, indicate that the diagnostic criteria are not met, or show that more information is needed before a conclusion can be reached. Paying for an assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis.
We explain the outcome when the clinical review is complete. Some assessments need further evidence before a conclusion can be reached. You receive a detailed written report setting out the findings and recommendations; the team will confirm the expected timescale.
Your report and practical next steps
The report explains the findings, clinical reasoning and recommendations. Follow-up support provides an opportunity to discuss what those recommendations could look like in daily life, including strategies for home, education or work.
Medication or further treatment may be discussed where clinically appropriate. Ongoing treatment, prescriptions and additional appointments are separate from the assessment fee; a diagnosis does not automatically lead to medication or GP shared care.
